Ruth Merritt: Consultant Speech and Language Therapist

 

Ruth has worked as a Speech and Language Therapist since 1981.

She set up a Specialist Service in Greenwich working in a health clinic as well as schools for autistic children and for deaf children.

In 1986 she began work on the Cochlear Implant Research Programme at UCH as well as working with congenitally deaf adults.

Since 1987, Ruth has worked as a freelance consultant in the field of deafness. More recently Ruth has developed expertise in working with children a range of complex difficulties including cerebral palsy, learning disorder, Autistic Spectrum Disorder and dyspraxia.

She has worked for City University and UCL as a clinical tutor and lecturer both on the undergraduate courses and on City University's MSc/ACS: Speech and Language Therapy with Deaf People, as well as being the course co-ordinator for the ACS.

Ruth has worked for many years in a number of South East London NHS Trusts in a variety of clinical settings with all ages of deaf children, and in addition acts as a consultant for a number of Health Districts advising them on aspects of their service for Deaf People.

She has been involved with the development and teaching of two key postgraduate courses for Speech and Language Therapists working in the field of deafness since 1985.

Ruth worked at Great Ormond Street Hospital Paediatric Cochlear Implant Programme as the Joint Principal Speech and Language Therapist from 2002- 2011.

  • University of Greenwich: Lecturing in the field of deafness, cochlear implants and acoustic phonetics.
  • Whitfield and Aspen School, Dover:Clinical work for a special school with chidlren with profound and multiple difficulties including Autistic Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy and learning difficulties providing weekly whole class support as well as providing individual therapy programmes.
  • Clinical Supervision at Doncaster School for the Deaf: Ongoing termly clinical support provided to the therapy assistant and teachers offering assessments and reports and terapy programmes for the deaf children.
  • Supervision and clinical support for The Royal School for Deaf Children, Margate: One day a week for the Autumn term 2013, offering intensive support, supervision, therapy and management for the SLT team for the diverse client group at the school.
  • Overseas Training and Consultancy: Cairo, Egypt: Children's centre- ongoing supervision of Therapists working in the Centre. Specialist assessments and detailed reports undertaken for a number of Eygyptian children with a range of communication difficulties including autism, dyslexia, language disorder and language delay.
  • Ongoing support/ advice and therapy: for children from medico-legal case interim payments- working closely with Case Managers and Solicitors to ensure best practice and provision for the child
